John & Claire Holmes and their car CPE 371 B |
Morris Minor Traveller (Smoke Grey) CPE371B was purchased new on 13th May 1964 by Miss U who lived in Guildford. Miss U worked in a local solicitors office and throughout her ownership worked at the same Solicitors and lived in the same Guildford flat. She drove the car as an every day vehicle until through age she was forced to stop driving in 2007. She had the car serviced at the same garage in Guildford throughout her ownership and the bills show the history of the dealership being transferred into the variants of the British motor industry. You start to sense during the 80's, 90's and the 00's that the Garage would rather that the eccentric Miss U would perhaps take her custom elsewhere. Miss Un maintained the car to a very high standard but gracefully updated components to make her driving easier. For instance electric starting and an alternator must have guaranteed starting first time, a servo for the brakes helped her slow the car as she got older and of course radial tyres. In 2005 the floor dip switch was changed to a switch on the dashboard, and the ashtray has never been used. As with any old car rust did set in and in 2004 she had the floor plan replaced - this was to a very high standard and thoughtfully she asked the repairer to photograph the repairs. Miss U was meticulous in her record keeping and kept all bills, receipts and MOT's for the car. In 2007 she sold the car and it was bought by an American Collector. He had amassed 50 British cars of all makes to start a collection - unfortunately he lost his home and business in the New Orleans hurricane and had to sell his collection in 2008. The entire collection was bought by a single small classic car dealer in Dorset. We've always been into Morgans and Hill climb and sprint competitions and have had 5 Morgans over the last 20 years ranging from a 1971 4/4 1600 cc ford engine to a 1997 Plus 8 4600cc range rover engine. We thought it was time for a change and started to look at MG's. We went to this dealer in September 2008 intending to look at a couple of MG's and we did - they weren't very exciting after the Morgan. We drove several vehicles and then looked at a minor convertible. We didn't think it was very tidy and then sat at the back of the garage was the traveller. The dealer explained that she had just come out of storage and hadn't been prepared, priced or advertised and had no MOT. Nonetheless we took her for a drive and decided there and then to buy her - a bit of haggling and we collected her the first weekend of October. She had covered 73,000 miles in her life - and thankfully neither the American or the Dealer registered the change of ownership so we are only the 2nd registered owner. We still have a Morgan and now the Morris Minor housed in a garage next to the Morgan and they look splendid together. The Morris will be our pride and joy and always makes us happy to drive it, hopefully she be with us until we to are forced to stop driving. |
